Alphabet Inc. (Google) is more sustainable according to SINK's open sustainability index, scoring 43/100 vs Microsoft's 39/100, a difference of 4 points.
Microsoft scores 39/100 on the SINK sustainability index (Below expectations). Microsoft's emissions rose 25% in FY2025 to 21.1 Mt CO2e, driven by data-centre construction: capital-goods emissions rose from 5.6 Mt to 9.0 Mt and Scope 3 is 86% of the total. It reports 100% renewable electricity matching, but As You Sow reports it holds nearly 60% of oil and gas cloud contracts, two of which exceed its entire footprint. The SBTi removed its net-zero commitment, and its plan relies heavily on carbon removal.
Alphabet Inc. (Google) scores 43/100 on the SINK sustainability index (Below expectations). Alphabet's emissions rose 18% in 2025 to 18.8 Mt CO2e, driven by data-centre growth, and Scope 3 rose 25% year on year. Its near-term target is a 50% absolute cut by 2030, which Google's own report says the SBTi validated in 2025, but emissions on its own ambition basis are 81% above 2019 and the plan leans on carbon removals and certificates.
Both companies are rated on the same 10-question SINK rubric: Scope 1/2/3 carbon footprint, energy source, nature and biodiversity, resource use, water, emissions trajectory, science-based targets, transparency, and controversies. Scores are 0–100, based on public data, and fully reproducible.
